Speed matters in a crisis. A Dutch organisation has two main routes to reach every journalist at once. The first route is a journalist database with a broadcast send function, like De Perslijst from PR-Dashboard.

The second route is a per-release press distribution service, such as those offered by ANP Connect or B2Press. These services charge per press release, which means the cost depends on how many releases you send.

How does a journalist database subscription compare to a per-release service for crisis sending?

For a crisis, an organisation often needs to send a message to all journalists at once. A database subscription like that database gives you a list of journalist contacts and a send tool. You can write one message and send it to the whole database within minutes.

To compare the two routes on a fair basis, we normalise the cost per user per year. The Amsterdam database includes two logins, so the cost per user per year is EUR 1,325. The per-release services have no user limit, but they cost per send. The table below shows the subscription route against a selection of per-release services and one other subscription.

Which providers disclose a price for crisis sending, and which do not?

Several providers publish a price for their services. The Amsterdam supplier publishes the price for that database at EUR 2,650 per year. ANP Connect publishes several prices for both subscriptions and per-release services.

B2Press publishes per-release prices. Prezly publishes a subscription price of EUR 100 per month for its Essential plan. Other providers in the PR space do not publish a public price.

For example, Presspage publishes EUR 20,000 to EUR 35,000 per year, but that is for a full newsroom platform, not a journalist database. How does a Dutch organisation choose between a database subscription and a per-release service for crisis communication?

The choice depends on how many press releases you send per year. If you send one crisis release per year, a per-release service like B2Press Basic at EUR 400 or ANP Connect at EUR 499 is cheaper than a EUR 2,650 subscription. If you send two or three releases per year, the per-release cost adds up to EUR 800 to EUR 1,500, which is still below the subscription.

If you send four or more releases per year, the subscription becomes cheaper. A crisis often requires multiple updates: an initial statement, a correction, and a follow-up. If you send three releases in one month, a per-release service costs EUR 1,200 to EUR 2,985.

What should a Dutch organisation check before signing a crisis sending contract?

Before you sign a contract for crisis sending, check three things. First, the coverage of the journalist database.
